Junior Tap

About Junior Tap

Tap is one of the most unique styles of dance as it uses hard shoes with metal plates to create round and rhythms when striking the floor.

Tap as we know it today covers many genres and includes Classical Tap (think the Nicholas Brothers and Fred Astaire), Broadway Tap (think 42nd Street, An American In Paris) and Rhythm Tap (think Tap Dogs and Bootmen).

At LCDC we integrate Comdance New Tap syllabus in our tap classes to provide the opportunity for dancers to learn and practice the foundation steps, as well as free exercises and a dance.

Students with a good sense of music and rhythm will get a real kick out of tap, as well as those who just want to make some noise and have fun!

Graded Levels

Tap Foundations (Kindergarten & Year 1 equivalent)

For our youngest tap dancers, we offer Tap Foundations’. This is a class combined of students in Pre-Primary and Primary level (Kindergarten and Year 1 at school). While this class is combined, our fantastic teacher Miss Madelyn is able to adapt the class and exercises to welcome new dancers and to further develop students’ technique.

Grade 1 & 2 Tap (Year 2 & 3 equivalent)*

At Grade 1 & 2 Tap levels LCDC introduces the Comdance New Tap syllabus to dancers to develop their tap technique and repertoire. Grade 1 & 2 Jazz classes are their own individual class, working on a different level of syllabus appropriate to students age and abilities.

Tap exams become available from Grade 1 for students who have grasped the concept of tap and show an understanding of the style, rhythm and music.

Often Grade 1 & 2 Tap classes combine for the end of year concert dance, as tap pieces are especially fun with more dancers!

*Please note that these are guidelines only. Teachers will assess students and recommend the appropriate grade class for them on an individual basis, taking into account their maturity, ability to develop the work etc.

Examinations & Assessments

As a Comdance registered school, LCDC is proud to be able to offer examinations for Tap.

While Comdance does have two levels of Tap Foundations exams, from 2022 onwards LCDC will not be doing examinations for Tap Foundations students as we want to give young students the freedom of an especially fun, low pressure class.

Examinations become available for students in Grade 1 Tap onwards. Teachers and the admin team at LCDC will take the time to communicate with you about where your dancer is at this time.

Pricing

An annual enrolment fee of $35 applies to all students. A 10% discount applies to families with multiple students. Costumes, special events and exam classes are payable separately. If vacancies allow, students are welcome to enrol mid-term and pro-rated from week 3 onwards.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Dancers are welcome to enrol in just a tap class, but a ballet or jazz class is highly recommended to compliment their tap and will help further develop practical knowledge, coordination, flexibility and strength.

  • Unfortunately, we only offer one tap class per level each week.

  • Typically students do progress by calendar year regardless of whether they take an exam or not. However, tap is one of the hardest styles of dance and it may be in a student’s best interest to repeat a grade to really grasp the work of one level before progressing to the next. Teachers will look at students on a case by case basis and our admin team will communicate with parents if this should be required.

Brilliant teachers who are knowledgeable about their craft as well as being sensitive to children’s needs. Also a very well organised dance school with excellent communication to parents.

My daughter has been attending since she was 3 years old and is now about to turn 8. It is a fantastic school with just the right balance of making it super fun for the kids, but teaching discipline, respect and deportment. My daughter and I have both made great friends here and it is a wonderful community. I highly recommend this school!
