Preschool Dance Classes

At Lisa Clark Dance Centre, our preschool program has been carefully designed to nurture a child’s natural love of movement while supporting their physical, social, and emotional development.

Developed in alignment with early childhood developmental milestones, our classes provide a structured yet imaginative introduction to dance — building confidence, coordination, musicality, and a love of learning from the very first class

About Preschool Dance Classes

First Steps (Ages 3-4)

A gentle introduction to dance in a warm and nurturing environment.

These 30-minute classes focus on:

  • Early coordination and movement exploration
  • Following simple instructions
  • Developing confidence in a group setting
  • Musicality through rhythm, clapping, and movement

Through games, music, and imaginative play, dancers begin to explore shapes, levels, and basic ballet movements while building independence and classroom routine.

Discovering Dance (Ages 3–5)

Building on the foundations of First Steps, this class introduces more structured dance learning.

These 45-minute classes focus on:

  • Coordination, balance, and early technique
  • Following multi-step instructions
  • Introduction to pathways, patterns, and simple sequences
  • Expressive movement and storytelling

Students begin to develop stronger technique, musical awareness, and confidence, while still maintaining the creativity and joy that is essential at this age.

When children experience the magic of dance early in the developmental years, they build a foundation of fundamental skills that carry them through life. Our focus in all our preschool classes to encourage a love of music and movement as well as basic dance technique to start them on their dance journey.

Benefits of Dance

  • 1.

    Creative Expression

Ballet invites young dancers into a world of imagination, where storytelling and movement come together to nurture creativity and self-expression.

  • 2.

    Emotional Wellbeing

Through music and movement, children learn to channel energy, regulate emotions, and experience a sense of calm, joy, and connection.

  • 3.

    Safe & Nurturing Environment

All classes are delivered within a carefully structured, supportive environment, aligned with national safe dance practices and age-appropriate training principles.

  • 4.

    Physical Foundations

Early ballet training supports the development of coordination, balance, strength, and posture, establishing strong physical foundations for growing bodies.

  • 5.

    Cognitive Development

Dance engages both mind and body. Through rhythm, musicality, and structured sequences, children develop memory, focus, and early problem-solving skills.

  • 6.

    Confidence & Joy

Above all, dance fosters confidence. Each class encourages children to participate, achieve, and take pride in their progress — all while experiencing the joy of movement.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • At LCDC, we have a uniform for all our dancers, including preschoolers. Having a uniform helps dancers associate putting on a uniform with being ready for class, and it also ensures that all students are equal in the studio.

Our uniform for preschoolers is a pale pink leotard, a pink soft tulle skirt, ballet tights or socks and ballet shoes. We sell the skirt at LCDC, and all other uniform items can be purchased at Bloch (Manuka) or Attitude Australia (Phillip and Mitchell).

Dancers trialling classes are welcome to wear whatever they like, just make sure it’s comfortable and not restrictive (jeans etc), and bare feet are best.

  • Absolutely! We accept new enrolments in our Preschool classes at any time throughout the year, with the exception of Term 4 where enrolments are closed while we prepare for our end of year performance.

New enrolments will have a pro-rata applied to term fees after Week 2 of each term.

  • Not at all! Due to the structure of our Preschool classes, students will go over fundamental steps and technique-building exercises multiple times with new stories to really help dancers grasp the basics.

  • First Steps is for students aged 3-4 years old. We recommend this class for students within this age group who are starting ballet for the first time or who are still a full year away from starting Kindergarten.

Discovering Dance is for students aged 4-5 who have already done First Steps, and/or are starting Kindergarten the following calendar year.

We like to keep students with the age group they will be going to Primary School with as much as possible. This helps build friendships and familiarity with one age group, and ensures they are in the correct level if they continue to dance at LCDC for years to come.

  • While we understand how much parents enjoy watching their children dance, our classes are intentionally structured as independent experiences. In our experience, even our youngest students benefit greatly from this, allowing them to develop focus, confidence, and a strong sense of independence within the studio environment.

Parents are welcome to join us in the studio for trials and during the first week of classes if needed, as their dancer settles. We do, however, encourage parents to gradually step just outside the studio (or “step out to take a call”) to support their child in building confidence and independence.

Brilliant teachers who are knowledgeable about their craft as well as being sensitive to children’s needs. Also a very well organised dance school with excellent communication to parents.

My daughter has been attending since she was 3 years old and is now about to turn 8. It is a fantastic school with just the right balance of making it super fun for the kids, but teaching discipline, respect and deportment. My daughter and I have both made great friends here and it is a wonderful community. I highly recommend this school!
