About Tap

Tap is one of the most unique styles of dance as it uses hard shoes with metal plates to create round and rhythms when striking the floor.

Tap as we know it today covers many genres and includes Classical Tap (think the Nicholas Brothers and Fred Astaire), Broadway Tap (think 42nd Street, An American In Paris) and Rhythm Tap (think Tap Dogs and Bootmen).

At LCDC we integrate Comdance New Tap syllabus in our tap classes to provide the opportunity for dancers to learn and practice the foundation steps, as well as free exercises and a dance.

Students with a good sense of music and rhythm will get a real kick out of tap, as well as those who just want to make some noise and have fun!

Graded Levels

Grade 3 - Senior Open Tap

Each of the tap classes from Grades 3-9 (each its own class) continue working on the Comdance New Tap syllabus, and dancers continue to develop their tap technique with an emphasis on articulation of ankles and feet. As dancers progress through the levels, the steps, exercises, amalgamations and rhythms become more complicated.

Each level explores different styles of tap, all using age appropriate music and choreography. Styles range through the grades and include Latin inspired tap (Cha-Cha and Tango), Modern Tap (taking inspiration from street dance styles, hip-hop and pop) and Traditional Tap (such as Fred Astaire, waltz tap, broadway tap etc).

Examinations & Assessments

As a Comdance registered school, LCDC is proud to be able to offer examinations for Tap.

Examinations are available for students in Grade 3 through to Grade 9. It is highly recommended that students wishing to take their tap exam also attend a ballet, jazz or lyrical class to complement their jazz class. Teachers and the admin team at LCDC will take the time to communicate with you about where your dancer is at this time.

Selected students excelling in Tap at Grade 5 or Grade 8 may be invited to take their Performance Exam, which consists of a variety of solos to be graded. Performance Exam work is not covered in class time and private lessons for this Exam will be required.

Pricing

An annual enrolment fee of $35 applies to all students. A 10% discount applies to families with multiple students. Costumes, special events and exam classes are payable separately. If vacancies allow, students are welcome to enrol mid-term and pro-rated from week 3 onwards.

See what our parents have to say

Brilliant teachers who are knowledgeable about their craft as well as being sensitive to children’s needs. Also a very well organised dance school with excellent communication to parents.

My daughter has been attending since she was 3 years old and is now about to turn 8. It is a fantastic school with just the right balance of making it super fun for the kids, but teaching discipline, respect and deportment. My daughter and I have both made great friends here and it is a wonderful community. I highly recommend this school!

Love the values that are instilled in the kids and the fun, safe and healthy environment they get to dance in. So many friends made and such a great network of people - for both kids and parents.....
